Sopwith Section

Monday 10 June 2013

Last year Graham Carlisle found this astonishing 42-foot geological section from Cross Fell to Hownes Gill in the north of England on e-bay.

Graham and Sue wrote an article to introduce this unique 1839 work by Thomas Sopwith  -  here is a link to the PDF   Carlisle, G.  & Turner, S. 2013. Sopwith's Surprise. The Geoscientist, March, 21-23. published February 25th   http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/en/Geoscientist - March issue and also see the Facebook page here.

In July they will present the section at the International History of Science, Technology & Medicine in Manchester.

Interestingly the Sopwith Camel and the Sopwith Pup were designed by Sir Tommy Sopwith the grandson of Thomas Sopwith.

vale 2012

January 2013

2012 was a busy, and latterly a harrowing year, with travel and work at the beginning in London (NHM) and elsewhere in the UK, in Germany and then USA.

I presented papers and posters at the vertebrate palaeontology meetings in September and October at Oxford University and Raleigh, NC, the latter with colleagues Ted Daeschler (ANSDU, Philadelphia) and Daniel Snyder (Middle Georgia College) and visited Yale University and Connecticut for the first time.

Peter Harris - my old Teacher

In 2011 and again in 2012 I went back to my home in the Midlands and after more than 40 years remet my high school teacher, Mr Peter Harris, who taught me everything I would want to know about the English language.
